Down on the Farm: 1-1 record, Jim Adduci with grand slam, Ian Happ struggling, more

After a hectic Saturday on the diamond, things were much more laid back on Easter Sunday as only two teams were in action. The day saw one team's season-long winning streak come to an end, while the other side remained red hot at the dish for the 1-1 record on the Farm.

IOWA CUBS 8 – Oklahoma City Dodgers 3: The Cubs may be wishing they could play the Dodgers all season as their offense has been on fire over the weekend. Sunday was another example of that as the Cubs erased a slow start with a five-run sixth to cruise to the 8-3 win.

Looking to rebound from his rough outing last time out, Duncan Robinson delivered on the mound going seven innings of the one-run ball allowing just four hits. He turned things over to the bullpen who gave up two runs in two innings, but Tony Barnette and Dakota Mekkes got the job done.

The lone run allowed by Robinson was in the second inning as the Dodgers had a rare lead. Cameron Perkins got the offense rolling with a one-out double. Paulo Orlando opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single to put Dodgers in front 1-0. That was all they could muster against Robinson as the righty stifled their bats the rest of the day.

It may have taken a little while to get going, but the Iowa offense finally got rolling in the sixth in hopes of backing Robinson. It was all about patience in the sixth inning as Dixon Machado, Donnie Dewees, and Ian Happ loaded the bases on walks with nobody out. Johnny Field picked up another RBI with his sacrifice fly before an intentional walk to Trent Giambrone loaded the bases yet again. That set the stage for the David Ross of Iowa, Mr. Jim Adduci. Not only did he put the Cubs in front, but he also did so in a big way mashing a grand slam to give Iowa the 5-1 lead in the sixth.

After a Jake Peter double cut things to 5-2 in the eighth, it was the long ball for Iowa that sealed the deal in the ninth as Machado left the yard for the third time this season pushing the lead to 8-2. Connor Joe picked up a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth or the Dodgers, but it was nowhere near enough as the Cubs cruised 8-3.

The Cubs continue to occupy the top spot in the league sporting an 11-6 record. The Grand Slam by Adduci was his lone hit, but he made it count, while Machado collected a pair of his own. Giambrone picked up another hit, while Happ went 0-2 with a couple of walks and a strikeout. He is now batting .206 on the season.

TENNESSEE SMOKIES: Off

MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS 1 – Lynchburg Hillcats 8: The winning streak came to an end for the Pelicans as the Hillcats jumped all over Myrtle Beach on Sunday. A rough start from Alex Lange who allowed six runs in the first two frames put the Pelicans in a massive hole as they would fall 8-1.

Things didn’t get off to that bad of a start, however, as the Pelicans offense continued their good stretch of play in the first inning. With two outs, it was Miguel Amaya keeping things going as his fifth double set himself up in scoring position. Cam Balego made sure to capitalize on that singling up the middle for the early 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, that was about all the excitement in this one as Lynchburg got rolling immediately in the bottom of the first. A bases-loaded triple from Oscar Gonzalez followed by another triple from Gavin Collins gave the Hillcats a 4-1 lead after one inning of play. Singles from Nolan James and Gonzalez in the second extended the lead to 6-1 as Lynchburg was in full control.

The Hillcats capped off their offensive attack in the fifth inning as Austen Wade singled home the game's seventh run before a double play pushed home another run for the 8-1 advantage. That was more than enough for Lynchburg as the Pelicans were held to just five hits in the game and three after the first inning before falling 8-1.

The loss ends the Pelicans four-game winning streak as they fall to 6-12 on the season. Amaya had one of his better games of the season reaching base three times on the day with a walk and two hits. Balego, D.J. Wilson and Zach Davis added the other three hits. Amaya has moved his average up to .245 while Balego has seven RBI’s in his last eight games.
