by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael is displaying signs of improvement in his health battle against a MRSA diagnosis.

According to a spokesperson for the family, Betsy Shepherd, McMichael is responding positively to antibiotics, raising hopes for his discharge later this week.

“Steve is responding to the antibiotics, and his condition is improving," she said. "We hope to have him home Tuesday with IV antibiotics. He’s one tough guy. He’s Mongo, and his DNA is different!"

Following hospitalization initially for a urinary tract infection, McMichael's diagnosis of MRSA came as a concerning development, as relayed by family members. His treatment regimen also included a blood transfusion to combat the illnesses.

His family wants fans to keep "Mongo" in their prayers as they believe it has been helping him.

"Steve and his family and close friends believe in the power of prayer. Thank you for your love and continued support for our Mongo," Shepherd's statement said.
