WATCH: Ben Johnson on rookie mini-camp, excited to watch WR Luther Burton |
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson addressed the media following day one of Rookie Minicamp.
Check out his press conference below:
Video summary/cliff notes:
(00:00–00:37) Rookie minicamp is also a "coach orientation" for the new staff. Johnson was pleased with how players competed and learned during the first session.
(00:37–01:19) Offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie (referred to as "Trapillo" in question) impressed with his intelligence and quick application of coaching concepts on the field.
(01:19–02:36) Johnson emphasized a coaching philosophy that encourages learning from mistakes. The staff is easing players in to avoid soft tissue injuries, so practice tempo is moderate.
(02:36–03:35) On tight ends, especially injured rookie Colston, the staff is prioritizing mental reps and recovery. They aim to accelerate learning via meetings and walk-throughs.
(03:35–04:18) No set weight targets yet for some rookies, but body composition goals are being developed. Coaches are evaluating and adjusting on the go.
(04:18–04:57) Johnson described his on-field demeanor as adaptable and praised his coaching staff. Blowing the whistle as head coach was a new experience for him.
(04:57–05:39) Roster competition is wide open — drafted, undrafted, and tryout players are all being evaluated equally. Players must earn each opportunity.
(06:02–06:45) Strongside linebacker spot is an open competition. The Bears have a prototype in mind but are focused on finding the third-best linebacker overall.
(07:01–07:38) Offensive line roles aren’t being decided yet. The spring is focused on system comprehension and fundamentals rather than depth chart battles.
(08:06) Johnson was excited about drafting WR Luther Burton in the second round and felt validated after seeing his early performance in camp.
