The Chicago Cubs released infielder Munenori Kawasaki on Tuesday according to team officials. The team decided to release him so he could find a landing spot with another major league team.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said during media interviews on Tuesday that it's possible that Kawasaki will eventually make it back to the Cubs.

Hopefully we get a chance to sign him back," Maddon said. "A guy like him needs to take advantage of how well he’s playing and possibly see if there’s a chance to get a major league job. That’s all that is. But we’d love to get him back."

Kawasaki, 35, hit .333 with a RBI and .462 on-base percentage with the Cubs in 2016. He batted .255 during the year with the Iowa Cubs.

For his MLB career, he has .237 average with one homer, 51 RBIs, and .320 on-base percentage. He has had stints with the Cubs, Blue Jays, and Mariners in his pro career.
