The Chicago Bears announced that former Bears tight end Earl Thomas passed away on July 4 in Houston following an illness.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Bears tight end and receiver Earl Thomas," Bears said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to his family, friends & loved ones."

Thomas was 71 years old.

He spent his first pro seasons in Chicago appearing in 39 games with 28 starts, catching 47 passes for 748 yards and seven touchdowns.
