Bears News: Caleb Williams on Packers rematch: “I like our chances versus anybody”

CHICAGO - Fast starts have been elusive for the Chicago Bears so far this season, but that was not a problem against the Cleveland Browns as Chicago jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and went on to win 31-3 in their largest win against the Browns in franchise history.

“You want to start the game off every week like that. But, definitely this week, not allowing them to get going, not allowing them to feel maybe some energy or feel that they can beat us,” quarterback Caleb Williams said. “That’s our mindset going into this game and starting fast and kind of diminishing any thoughts that may pop up of positivity on their side. That’s the mindset going into these games.”

Chicago’s defense leads the league in takeaways with 30. However, capitalizing on those turnovers has been a problem at times for the Bears.

That was not the case against the Browns, as the Bears scored 17 points off three turnovers.

“When you get the interceptions or you get the turnovers and fumbles or whatever the case may be, you want to go down and score. It creates a sense of momentum for us and it gets everybody in it. It gets everybody going and that momentum is important to help us win games,” Williams said. “Shifting every, shifting momentum, shifting the points and things like that and adding one more possession for us is huge and so, that’s something that we preach. It’s something that we’re going to keep harping on, something that we’re going to keep growing at is when defense creates these turnovers, we got to go score.”

Overall, Chicago’s win against the Browns was arguably the Bears’ most well-rounded victory of the season. It also marked the first time since week three that Williams’ completion percentage was above 60 percent in a win. Some of his throws were jaw-dropping, including his 22-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver DJ Moore.

When asked if he could have made a better read on that play, Williams had a simple response: “I can make any throw.”

At this point, the Bears have won in every way imaginable - a game-winning field goal, blocking a field goal, an offensive shootout, and complete domination.

They have done so with a revolving door of players given various injuries at numerous positions, giving Williams and the rest of the Bears the confidence to beat anyone.

“We’ve played teams that have a bunch of wins. We’ve played teams that don’t. We’ve played close games. We’ve played games where we’ve beaten teams by a lot,” Williams said. “We’ve played teams where we had to win with special teams, offense, defense, (running) the ball, whatever the case and so, I feel that we’re ready for just about anything - hot weather, cold weather, whatever the case may be. We’re going to go out there and go out there and fight. I do know that and I like our chances versus anybody.”

Last time against the Green Bay Packers did not end well for Williams and the Bears. The game came down to a fourth-down conversion, and Williams threw an interception in the end zone, sealing the loss for Chicago and ending their five-game winning streak.

However, Williams will be seeking redemption with the Packers coming to Soldier Field on Sat. Dec. 20 (7:20 p.m. / FOX).

“I’m excited. Ended up obviously throwing the pick as everybody knows in those last moments and kind of let (them) off the hook throwing such a bad ball to Cole and so, I’m definitely excited. I’m excited for the moment,” Williams said. “They’re coming here and it’s another game for us, but I’m excited.”
