The Chicago Bears have added another tight end to their roster, signing veteran Stephen Carlson to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports.
The former Cleveland Browns tight end impressed during Chicago's minicamp this past weekend, leading to the signing. Carlson is a 6'4", 240-pound tight end who played his college football at Princeton before going undrafted in 2019. He spent the past three seasons with the Browns, appearing in 27 games and mainly serving as a run-blocking tight end. However, Carlson missed the entirety of the 2021 season after tearing his ACL during the preseason. He was released by the Browns earlier this year and had been out of football until the Bears gave him a chance to showcase his skills at their minicamp. He has six career receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. It remains to be seen how the Bears plan to utilize their tight end group, but Carlson's presence should provide a boost to the team's run-blocking capabilities. He joins a talented tight end duo with Cole Kmet and Robert Tonyan. Carlson is a low-risk move for the Bears, with the potential to pay dividends if he can return to the form he showed prior to his injury.
